Default VPS Resource usage

Hi

We were, until recently, hosting a forum on a shared server and have just been suspended to to excessive resource usage.

I need to find a new server to host the forum on, will a VPS be suitable for our needs? (the forum has about 500 members)

My main concern is that we will also have a resource issue with the VPS as well... once we get going again, as we are expected to keep growing.

I would like to know what your policy is if we use a lot of VPS resource, specifically mySQL 'update' and 'select'.

Basically I do not want to have my hosting account suspended again. !!

I would also like to add a couple of questions...

Do the VPSs have SVN installed so that I can checkout and update code from open source projects (like Wordpress etc. ) using the command line.
e.g
svn up

And if not, is this something that is easy to install.

Does each VPS have it's own mySQL database engine? Or is it a shared resource across many servers?
My reason for asking is because of the above post, in that I expect our forum to use the SQL server quite a lot.
